Berkata Al Allamah Abdurrahman bin Yahya Al Mu’alimi Rahimahullah:

Sungguh sebagian orang, terlalu ingin dikenal dengan kemerdekaan berpikir, sampai mereka lalai dari menilai yang benar dan yang salah dari sebuah pemikiran. Hingga jadilah “kebebasan berpikir” sebuah sinonim bagi tindakan keluar dari ideologi yang berada diatasnya orang-orang terdahulu. Bahkan sebagian mereka sepenuhnya sadar ideologi yang dianut oleh ayah dan kakeknya adalah sebuah kebenaran, namun ambisinya untuk menjadi seorang yg disebut memiliki kebebasan berpikir justru menyeret ia untuk menyelisihi ideologi para pendahulunya tersebut. Lalu apa orang ini bisa disebut sebagai seorang yang memiliki kebebasan berpikir?

Banyak dari mereka sengaja meninggalkan tindakan mengikuti para pendahulunya, lalu ia justru mengikuti orang-orang yang mulhid. Maka ia telah membebaskan dirinya dari perbudakan kepada kemerdekaan? Tidak, sejatinya ia hanya keluar dari satu keterkungkungan kepada yang lainnya.

Seseorang yang memiliki kebebasan berpikir adalah ketika ia membebaskan pada apa yang ia mampu bebaskan, namun menahannya pada apa yang harus ditahan. Kebebasan berpikir adalah ketika seseorang berupaya untuk mencari kebenaran dimanapun ia berada. Jikalau kebenaran ada pada pegangan para pendahulunya, ia memegangnya. Tak peduli jika ia disebut seorang yang kaku dan peniru.

Seorang yang memiliki kebebasan berpikir adalah, seorang yang berusaha untuk teguh pada pijakan yang berada padanya para pendahulunya, hingga ada bukti kuat yang dapat mengubahnya.
